Nectarines can be pruned for maximum sun even in the interior canopy of the tree. Pruning must be done at the end of winter, before new growth begins. Head the tree by pruning the leader and upper branches to promote growth to the sides of the trunk. Remove branches that cross one another, grow downward or upward. Lateral branches are the fruiting branches.
Use sharpened pruning loppers and fine-toothed saws for thicker branches. After cutting diseased branches, sanitize pruning tools with a mixture of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. Foggy coastal areas with moderate temperatures and low hours of sun are not always appropriate for growing nectarines. The lack of sun, combined with the temperature-moderating effects of the ocean, reduce chill hours and summer heat, preventing many varieties of nectarine from optimal fruiting, and others from fruiting at all.
